by Dr. Fritz Schiesser, President of the ETH Board

The ETH Board is the strategic management and supervisory body of the ETH. It is presently com- posed of a president and eight further members from the fields of science and commerce and industry. The ETH Board is responsible for fulfilling and implementing the science policy performance mandate set by the Federal Council and the Federal Parliament and for the four-year strategy for the ETH. It is also responsible for the allocation of Federal funding within the ETH.

Dr. Fritz Schiesser has been the President of the ETH Board since January 2008. From 1990 to 2007 he was a member of the Council of States (Ständerat) and its President from 2003 to 2004. He was a member of the following committees and delegations of the Swiss Federal Assembly: Committee for Economic Affairs and Taxation; Committee for Science, Education and Culture; Committee for Legal Affairs; Member of the Delegation to the Inter-Parliamentary Union/previously Member of the Parlia- mentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
Since 1998 Dr. Schiesser has had his own law and notary practice. From 1986 to 1998 he was Legal Advisor for the Glarner Kantonalbank. He did his practical legal training in Glarus and took the bar ex- amination. He was an Assistant Lecturer in Civil Law at the University of Zurich, where he studied Law.
