“Episodes from my Life as a Scientist in Japan”

In his presentation Kurt Wüthrich will focus on his experiences in Japan and place these in perspective with events in Switzerland and elsewhere on the globe.

In talking about Japan, he will recollect some pleasant times, including being elected Secretary General of the International Union of Pure and Applied Biophysics (IUPAB) during the International Biophysics Congress in Kyoto in 1978, the award of the Shield of the Faculty of Medicine at Tokyo University in 1983, appointments at RIKEN with the title of “Eminent Scientist of RIKEN”, the award of the Kyoto Prize in Advanced Technology in 1998, meetings with the Emperor and Empress of Japan and, most importantly, long-standing friendships with colleagues in Japan.

Kurt Wüthrich (*1938) received the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 2002 “for his development of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy to determine the three-dimensional structure of biological macromolecules in solution” together with John B. Fenn from Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, USA, and Koichi Tanaka from Shimadzu Corp. in Kyoto, Japan.
