Topic:

Japan was among the first countries to be affected by the Corona virus. It is also one of the very few countries that tries to navigate the Covid-19 crisis without “lockdowns” and crippling restrictions for companies. While the jury is still out to see if this can work, we already know that Japan’s policies are becoming an interesting case for a “new normal” after the Covid19 crisis.

Japan’s special way has been helped by its long-term pre-cautions against influenza-type epidemies, high hygienic standards, its ability to adjust to new policy demands, and a strong healthcare system. All these ingredients will be necessary anywhere after the crisis. Most importantly, however, the government’s decision to keep the economy going for as much and as long as possible, burdened the bulk of crisis management responsibilities on the shoulders of companies and households from the start. Companies around the world will face these challenges when the lockdowns end and economies slowly restart – while Covid-19 challenges still linger. The “new normal” will have to include more resilient operations, broader health considerations, new workstyles, better government-business cooperation, and a lot of smart technology.
