Shinnenkai 2026

Shinnenkai 2026: The perfect way to start the year with a meaningful event.
This month, the SJCC held its traditional Shinnenkai event, at the historic Zunfthaus zur Waag. The evening brought together more than 90 participants from the Swiss-Japanese business community.
The evening was opened by President SJCC Martin Herb. In his speech, he welcomed the guests and shared a confident outlook on the Chamber’s activities for the year ahead.
Another highlight was the engaging speech delivered by H.E. Toshiro Iijima, the Ambassador of Japan to Switzerland and Liechtenstein. He reflected on the many connections between Japan and Switzerland, ranging from close cooperation and mutual trust to culinary delicacies and shared values.
Rooted in Japanese tradition, Shinnenkai marks the official welcoming of the new year. The ceremonial Kagami Biraki (sake barrel opening) symbolised renewal, shared purpose and good fortune, setting a meaningful tone for the months ahead.
A Swiss-style dinner and lively exchanges across cultures, businesses and industries rounded off an evening defined by tradition, dialogue and community.
